After Friday night’s feel-good win over Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks, the New Orleans Pelicans couldn’t keep pace with the Houston Rockets on Saturday, losing 126-112.

On the second night of a back-to-back, New Orleans seemed to run out of gas in the game’s second quarter. The Pelicans ended the first quarter with 35-27 lead, but surrendered 48 points in the second period. They carried a 75-57 deficit into the half.

Behind a spirited third-quarter run from Zion Williamson, New Orleans managed to cut the deficit to eight, but Houston responded with 25-10 run to end the period to effectively put the game away.

It was obvious that New Orleans didn’t have the gas to pull off the comeback, as they fell behind by as many as 24 points before the reserves closed the gap in the end to make the final score a tad more respectable.

Houston was led by a 27-point, nine-rebound effort from Christian Wood. Victor Oladipo turned in 20 points, six rebounds and seven assists while John Wall ended the night with 15 points and nine assists.

New Orleans was led by Williamson, who had 26 points, seven rebounds and four assists. He, unfortunately, didn’t get much help from his teammates.

The Good: Zion Williamson's dominance

The Pelicans were coming off of a nice win over the Bucks on Friday night and were playing on the second night of a back-to-back, but Williamson was the only one with any real pep in his step.

The youngster was spry and engaged and almost single-handedly helped New Orleans make a contest out of the competition in the game’s third quarter when he scored 14 points. New Orleans cut the deficit to eight, but couldn’t get any closer.

He was the lone bright spot for Stan Van Gundy’s team in what ended up being a tough loss.

The Bad: Terrible night shooting the ball

One night after burning up the nets from 3-point territory agains the Bucks, New Orleans could barely buy one from long range. As a team, the Pels connected on just 12 of their 41 attempts from beyond the arc, good for just 29.3%.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker shot just 1-for-8, while Eric Bledsoe was a slightly better 2-for-8.

Brandon Ingram had a rare off night, shooting just 5-for-15 from the field, including 2-for-7 from deep. He ended the night with a rather pedestrian 15 points, but did managed five rebounds and four assists.

The Lonzo Ball: Struggles from the field

Like the rest of his teammates, Lonzo Ball struggled from the field. He shot 3-for-8 from the field, including just 1-for-6 from distance

(If you’re noticing a trend here, you’re not alone).

All things considered, Ball had a rather forgettable night. The final line: seven points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Ball had a plus-minus of minus-4 in 28 minutes of action.

The Pelicans will host the Sacramento Kings on Monday night to complete their three games in four nights stretch.
