The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) has announced the launch of its 2022 technology startup accelerator programme.
The Players Accelerator programme was first developed in January 2020, with its previous two editions operated virtually, as a platform for current and former NBPA members to jump-start their business ventures and startup ideas.
The programme has been developed over the last two years by the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) players’ union alongside specialist private investment platform Patricof Co.
Partnering with Andreessen Horowitz’s cultural leadership fund, Patricof Co and the 2022 Players Accelerator kicked off last month, with participants beginning to prepare their business plans.
In the final stage of the programme in July, participants will attend a two-day ‘training camp’ in Las Vegas, featuring an exclusive athlete-venture mixer and culminating in the traditional ‘investor day’.
The programme is designed to provide NBA players with experience in pitching their business ideas to investors while also receiving constructive advice to enhance their skills as leaders in the business world. In order to participate, current or recently retired players must play an active role in a company at the early stage of its financing.
“Our members are more than basketball players and have a proven track record as investors, entrepreneurs, board members, and principals of their own brands,” said Tamika Tremaglio, executive director of the NBPA.
“With the NBPA Players Accelerator Programme, we want to ensure that our current and former members are receiving the best-in-class resources to learn, network, and grow as business titans in a creative and competitive environment.”
JaVale McGee (pictured above), an NBPA member, as well investor and entrepreneur, added: “The NBPA’s Players Accelerator is a great opportunity for current and former players to gain practical experience and immerse themselves in an entrepreneurial environment. It’s always exciting to learn how players are increasingly networking with business leaders and taking the initiative to maximise their platform off the court.
“These types of programmes are truly invaluable and I look forward to seeing players utilise this experience to continue their own professional development.”
