The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: Central Connecticut State edition - State Of The U

stratupnation.blogspot.com

Man, it feels good to be the hammer instead of the nail, no?

The Miami Hurricanes got a much-needed blowout victory over the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon, scoring TDs on their first 7 possessions and coasting to a 69-0 win.

I had your game recap:

Justin Dottavio picked out the 3 Stars from the game

And now, we dive into The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

  • Winning. It feels good, even to beat a team you should beat as badly as Miami did today. I like winning. We should do it more often.
  • A record-setting offensive day. Miami’s 739 yards of offense set a program record, eclipsing the 689 yards posted in the legendary 1999 win against UCLA.
  • Playing the younger players on the roster. I don’t have the participation report yet, but Miami played pretty much every available scholarship player today, and that’s huge. The Canes needed to play some of the young guys, and playing all of them, with many of them having impactful performances, is a big big win for Miami.
  • QB Tyler Van Dyke. 10-11 for 270 yards with 3 TDs and 0 INTs in his first career start. Nearly a perfect game from him.
  • QB Jake Garcia. 11-14 for 147 yards with 2 TDs and 0 INTs in is first career action.
  • RB Cam Harris. 100 yards and 2 TDs rushing along with and 83 yard TD catch.
  • RBs Cody Brown and Thad Franklin. 77 yards and 2 TDs and 88 yards and 1 TD, respectively.
  • WR Brashard Smith. 91 yards and a TD through the air, a nice kick return, and 2 carries for 8 yards. A little of everything.
  • WRs Romello Brinson and Jacolby George. Each freshman had their first TD catch of their career. And Brinson’s was INCREDIBLE. See the video below:
  • S James Williams. In his first career start, the 5-star recruit had his first career interception and made several nice plays. Welcome to the show, kid!
  • All the counting stats. Which I’m not gonna be lazy and skip so here we go:
  • Program-record 739 yards of offense
  • 417 yards passing
  • 322 yards rushing
  • 31 first downs
  • 7-9 on 3rd down
  • 10.6 yards per play
  • 19.9 yards per completion
  • 7.2 yards per rush
  • 3 sacks
  • 5 TFL
  • 9 receivers with a catch today
  • 18 chunk plays — 9 passes (15+), 9 rushes (10+)
  • Only 3 penalties
  • Pitched a shutout on defense
  • Only 11 first downs allowed
  • Held CCSU to 5-18 on 3rd down, and 1-3 on 4th down
  • Held CCSU to 3.1 yards per play
  • Held CCSU to 1.1 yard per carry
  • Looking the way Miami should look in a game like this.
  • 3 penalties. I wanted a fully clean game.
  • Allowing a substantial drive. No, they didn’t yield points for CCSU, but allowing that last drive of 12 plays for 61 yards ending in a relatively short FG attempt isn’t what I wanted to see.
  • The lightning/weather delay. That sucked.
  • More suspensions. This time, it was Gurvan Hall Jr. for a violation of team rules.
  • Injuries. D’Eriq King missed today’s game. Will he be back for Thursday’s ACC Opener against Virginia?
  • The fact that it took the putrid performances against actual competition to inspire the performance we saw today. If the standard is the standard, WHY NOT PLAY LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME!??!!??! No, I’m not expecting 69-0 against FBS competition, but Miami played much harder today. They cared. And it makes me angry because why haven’t they played hard or cared before!??!?!?

Record setting day. Highlights all over the place. 10 touchdown win. This is what it should be today. But 5-6 in the red zone and forced to punt once take the grade down a bit for me. Yes I’m nitpicking. Fight me.

Shutout and the associated stats are both good. Would have liked to see more havoc plays. TFLs. Turnovers. Those kinds of things. And there were a couple missed tackles still, and I wanted to see 0 of those. So, very very good, with room for improvement, even against this level of competition.

The backup kicker missed a PAT. 1 Punt for 50 yards. 1 KR for 27. A couple PRs for 16. Pretty good coverage, including a couple BIG HITS from the young kids on specials. Solid if unspectacular today.

In short: the staff did the job there was to do. I already said on Twitter last week I’m not overreacting to beating down the likes of CCSU. So, good job to do what needed to be done, but much more will need to be seen and done against actual competition for me to raise this grade higher than this.

That’s it for this edition of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Hop in the comments and share your thoughts.
