Like the first meet of the season last Tuesday in St. Cloud, the Cardinals finished in fifth place as the CLC’s top five stayed the same.
Alexandria was the team champion with a score of 324, beating second-place Brainerd by 11 strokes. Fergus Falls (388), Sartell (389) and Willmar (417) rounded out the top five.
The 18-hole meet started with a delay as a brief thunderstorm rolled through the area.
“The coaches got together and decided we were all in the same boat,” said Willmar co-head coach Bryan Mara. “No warmups and as soon as we got out of the vans, the girls got to their holes. Considering that, all the girls handled it pretty well.”
While the score was up from the first CLC meet, the Cardinals’ top golfer made a climb in the standings. Kessa Mara once again paced Willmar, finishing in a four-way tie for sixth place with a score of 85. She had a strong start with a birdie on No. 4, eventually sitting at 4-over par through nine holes.
In the No. 2 spot, Bailey Olson had an eight-stroke improvement to card a 91, good for 14th place overall. After a rough front-nine that saw her at 15-over par, Olson had a birdie on No. 13 along with three pars.
“Bailey played wonderful on the back nine,” Bryan said. “One of the best back nines of her career.”
Seventh-grader Kennedy Mara was tied for 32nd with 116, and Halle Mortensen and Alexa Kath tied for 37th with 125 for the final team spot.
“That was Kennedy’s first real (18-hole) golf meet ever and she did pretty well,” Bryan said.
He added, “I’m pretty proud of how they handled it in adverse conditions. … We got a young team but we got a lot of good, athletic players that have a bright future ahead.”
Alexandria dominated the top spots again with three golfers in the top five. Alexandria teammates Hannah Boraas and Cora Larson tied for medalist honors with 78. Brainerd’s Anna Krieger was third with 81.
The Willmar girls have two more meets this week. On Friday, the Cardinals have another CLC meet at Bemidji Town & Country Club. Then on Saturday, Willmar will play in an invitational hosted at Geneva Golf Course in Alexandria.
