Minnesota had a crucial Week 14 game against Tampa Bay. Unfortunately for the Vikings, the team had more bad and ugly than good.

Special teams miscues, costly penalties and the offensive line struggling in the passing game led to the Vikings dropping the game and moving to 6-7 on the year.

Before it plays Chicago in Week 15, Minnesota will have to assess what needs to change in order to keep its playoff hopes alive. To do so, it’s important to look at what worked and what really did not.

So here is the good, the bad and ugly from the Tampa Bay game:

The good: Skill position players

The Vikings were swiftly beaten in the trenches — on both sides of the ball — against the Buccaneers.

It wasn’t all bad, though. Running back Dalvin Cook averaged 4.6 yards per carry, finishing with 102 rushing yards.

Tight end Irv Smith Jr. also had a good day (I’ll count tight end as a skill position in this instance). He tallied 63 receiving yards and a touchdown reception.

Cousins threw the touchdown, had no picks and finished with 225 passing yards. He wasn’t perfect, but he wasn’t bad, either.

The bad: The field goal kicking

If Minnesota has any hope of salvaging its season, its kicker cannot have the games he had against Jacksonville and Tampa Bay.

Dan Bailey missed three field goals and one extra point, leaving 10 points on the table vs. Tampa Bay.

The Jaguars proved that the Vikings can persevere through bad field goal kicking to win a game. But the Buccaneers are not the Jaguars. Good teams will take advantage, as Tampa Bay showed on Sunday.

The ugly: the line play

As mentioned before, Minnesota was dominated on the line of scrimmage. The Vikings offensive line gave up six sacks. The team’s defensive line had none.

Against the Bears this season, Minnesota’s pass rush helped the defense thrive and kept Chicago at bay. That has to happen again in Week 15 against the Bears for the Vikings to get back to .500. If not, I wouldn’t put it past Minnesota to drop another important game.
