Steelers 28, Texans 21: The good, bad and ugly - Houston Chronicle

stratupnation.blogspot.com

The Texans seemed to be flying high Sunday in Pittsburgh thanks to an impressive first half.

But, as it seems to happen with this franchise during its 19 seasons, the bottom fell out during the final 30 minutes.

A goose egg posted by the offense during the second half dropped the Texans to 0-3 this season and for the second time in three years to start a campaign.

Without further ado, here’s a look at the good, bad and ugly from Steelers 28, Texans 21:

THE GOOD

1. That first half. Deshaun Watson carved up the Steelers’ defense, extending plays and making magic happen. The two-minute offense, usually lacking in terms of tempo, even looked good and Bill O’Brien’s clock management left nothing to complain about.

2. Randall Cobb. The veteran slot receiver who was a non-factor the first two weeks had four catches for 95 yards, including a touchdown and a pair of long runs after the catch. Hardly filling the void left by DeAndre Hopkins, it’s a start.

3. Watt family’s Q rating. If you didn’t know who the Watt family was by their ubiquitous Subway commercial, you do now after the countless mentions by CBS broadcasters that all three brothers were playing in Sunday’s game.

THE BAD

1. Second-half offense. After such a good first half, what was that? The Tim Kelly-led offense doesn’t seem too different from the one with Bill O’Brien calling plays. With Deshaun Watson, why not let him loose instead of running such a conservative game plan during the second half?

2. Texans’ rushing offense. A whopping 15 carries for 29 yards. For the game. David Johnson, the $16 million back acquired in return for all-world receiver DeAndre Hopkins, churned out a whole 23 yards on 13 carries. The Texans’ penchant for running on first down when the ground game was getting nothing going was head-scratching, to say the least.

3. Texans’ rushing defense. It might lock down a spot in this space the rest of the season the way things are going. The Steelers rushed 38 times for 169 yards and pushed the Texans’ defense around with the game on the line. Vikings back Dalvin Cook, who ran for 181 yards Sunday, must be salivating about facing the Texans next weekend.

THE UGLY

1. The situation. The Texans are 0-3, with all of those losses within the AFC. Meanwhile, Tennessee is 3-0, leading the AFC South and keeps finding ways to win. The Texans found a way to overcome starting 0-3 in 2018 and made the playoffs. But the likes of DeAndre Hopkins, Jadeveon Clowney and Tyrann Mathieu aren’t walking through the NRG Stadium doors anytime soon.
