Startup Knox Podcast features Knoxville entrepreneurs - Knoxville News Sentinel

The musical "Hamilton" made its streaming debut on July 3. More than 750,000 people worldwide downloaded the Disney+ app that holiday weekend, a boost of almost 75% over June numbers for Disney’s streaming service.

The chorus of one of the hit songs in Hamilton asks of the main character, “Will they tell your story?” The resounding answer, of course, is yes. As a result of the acclaimed Broadway play and its soundtrack, Alexander Hamilton is perhaps the Founding Father best known by this generation.

Startup Knox launched in April featuring a Startup Ecosystem Guide and then added a Startup Directory, an Investor Directory, and a Startup Events calendar. But the truly exciting thing about startups are their stories.

The new Startup Knox Podcast puts stories front and center by featuring interviews with Knoxville entrepreneurs about their startups. I get to talk with local innovators striving to build the next wave of disruptive companies.

We cover the gamut of the startup experience – the proverbial rollercoaster. The high highs of getting the first customer, hiring a great team, and landing a key investment. And the low lows of parting ways with a co-founder, losing a strategic account, and running out of cash. Not to mention the everyday stresses of meeting payroll, battling competitors, and navigating black swan events like a global pandemic.

So far, we’ve recorded episodes with:

Anna Douglas, SkyNano Technologies

Erica Grant, Quantum Lock

Lia Winter, Winter Innovations

Tommy Nguyen, StoragePug

Alex Abell, Lunchpool

Andy Moss, 3DIQ

James Horey, Reviewbox

Jenna Johns, RDI Technologies

Jame Houghton, MySimpleLife

Megan O’Connor, Nth Cycle

Mitchell Ishmael, Active Energy Systems

We’ll be releasing these episodes throughout the summer and recording many more. Platforms like Apple, Google and Spotify make it easy to subscribe to a podcast and get notified when new episodes go live.

Storytelling is key to achieving the three main goals of Startup Knox:

Grow a significant and sustainable startup economy in Knoxville and the surrounding region.

Establish the Knoxville region as a premier hub for innovation, collaboration, entrepreneurship, and startups.

Energize an active network of BigCos, institutions, investors/funders, entrepreneurs, and startups.

I’m grateful for the many storytellers in our community that cover startups including the team at Knox.biz (business), Tom Ballard at Teknovation (technology and innovation), and Alan Sims at Inside of Knoxville (downtown business and real estate). I read these every morning.

The aim of the Startup Knox podcast is to introduce the community to local founders in a format that you can listen to anywhere – in your car, or when you’re out for a walk or run, or when you’re poolside on a hot summer day.

In the final song of "Hamilton," his widow Eliza asks what every startup founder wonders while trying to build a new company:

And when my time is up

Have I done enough?

Listen to the podcast to find out.

Brandon Bruce is a co-founder of Startup Knox with John Bruck, and board chair of the Knoxville Entrepreneur Center.
