Week four is behind us and seven teams have now played a conference game. The conference slate will continue to heat up this weekend, as there are only a handful of non-conference games left this season. Let’s take a look back at this weekend’s results. Here are your good, bad, and ugly performances from week four.
The Good
Boise State
It wasn’t always pretty, but it was probably the best performance of the year for the Broncos. The defense surrendered plenty of yards, but staunch red zone defense helped the Boise State defense give up only three points. Hank Bachmeier had another solid performance and Khalil Shakir surpasses 100 yards receiving, yet again. The play calling was far more creative and it showed as the run game was more productive.
Air Force
It was an easy win for the Falcons over Florida Atlantic. The Falcons soared out to a quick lead and never looked back. Quarterback Haaziq Daniels had a great performance rushing for 164 yards and throwing for another 70.
San Diego State
It wasn’t their sharpest performance, but the Aztecs did what they need to do and left with a convincing victory over an FCS foe in Towson. The Aztecs rushed for 281 yards, averaging six yards per carry. The Aztecs head into a bye week before kicking off conference play against New Mexico. They will likely be ranked if they win that game.
Colorado State
I have to be honest, I didn’t think the Rams had it in them to go toe-to-toe with the number five team in the country. Colorado State held a 14-7 lead over Iowa at the half, but their offense managed only 127 yards in the second half and were shutout. The Rams have looked like a different squad the past two weeks. If they can keep progressing, they will be dangerous in conference play.
Hawaii
It wasn’t always pretty, but the Rainbow Warriors traveled to New Mexico and took care of business against the Aggies of New Mexico State. Chevan Cordeiro was sharp and the running game looked strong. This team is close, but they need to be more consistent on both sides of the ball.
The Bad
Wyoming
This was a puzzling performance by a team that has been all over the place to start the season. The Cowboys took on the worst team at the FBS level in UCONN and trailed for much of the game. Wyoming needed a late stop on a two point conversion to come away with the victory. Sure, Wyoming is 4-0, but their schedule hasn’t exactly been tough and the results haven’t been convincing. The Cowboys have a bye this weekend, but the schedule will start to get real when they take on Air Force the following week.
Fresno State
The Bulldogs hosted UNLV this weekend and had arguably their worst performance of the year. Fresno State was favored by 30 but behind the majority of the game. Thanks to another great second half by Jake Haener, the Bulldogs were able to escape with a 38-30 victory. Fresno State cannot afford that type of performance against the heavyweights of the league.
UNLV
It was their best performance of the year and they still came up short. UNLV looks to have found some luck on the offensive side of the ball, as the recruiting that Marcus Arroyo has done is starting to pay dividends. But there aren’t many opportunities for wins on their schedule. This team will need to be stouter in defending the pass and find a way to finish games. The Rebels have now blown opportunities against Eastern Washington and Fresno State.
The Ugly
Utah State
The Aggies moved the ball with ease in the first half with 317 yards of total offense but entered the locker room trailing 10-0. Boise State’s defense made adjustments in the second half, and the Aggies found less success moving the ball on their way to a 27-3 defeat. This team is vastly improved and has done it largely with transfers. This team could be really dangerous in a few years.
San Jose State
The Spartans have had to deal with a brutal schedule in regards to travel - Hawaii one weekend and Western Michigan the next. San Jose State sure looked jet-lagged as they fell behind early and struggled to move the ball on offense. A bigger cause for concern is quarterback Nick Starkell leaving the game with an injury.
New Mexico
There aren’t a lot of opportunities for the Lobos to win games throughout the remainder of their schedule, and the lost to UTEP on Saturday has to sting. The Lobos led for a good deal of the contest, but the offense struggled to move the ball and the Miners were able to seize momentum late in the game.
